Eco-Competent is a European project that aims to strengthen the capacity of youth workers to support young people facing climate-related challenges and eco-anxiety. As concerns about climate change continue to grow, many young people experience feelings of uncertainty, fear, and helplessness about the future. At the same time, they are motivated to make a positive difference but often lack the support and opportunities needed to turn their concerns into meaningful action.
The project addresses this challenge by equipping youth workers with practical tools, knowledge, and skills to combine climate education with wellbeing, resilience, and empowerment. Through a research-based training programme, participants will learn how to discuss climate issues in a constructive and psychologically safe way, helping young people transform anxiety into motivation, hope, and active engagement.
Eco-Competent promotes sustainable lifestyles, climate literacy, and sustainable mobility while encouraging creativity, leadership, and community participation. It also creates opportunities for youth workers from different European countries to exchange experiences, share good practices, and build a strong network committed to climate action and youth wellbeing.
The project responds directly to the needs of participating organisations, many of which work with young people in diverse and often challenging social contexts. While these organisations have strong experience in youth work and non-formal education, they often lack structured methodologies, training opportunities, and international support networks to effectively address climate anxiety and climate education. Eco-Competent provides a common framework, professional development opportunities, and cross-border cooperation that will strengthen their capacity and increase the impact of their work.
Ultimately, Eco-Competent seeks to empower youth workers and young people alike, helping them move from fear to action, from uncertainty to resilience, and from concern to positive change for a more sustainable future.
