ECOPULSE is a European initiative that connects sport with sustainable climate action. By using the popularity and accessibility of sport, the project raises awareness, inspires responsibility, and motivates citizens to actively participate in tackling climate change.
Climate change cannot be addressed through policies alone, it requires engagement from communities, organizations, volunteers, and individuals. The sports sector, with its strong social influence, plays a vital role in this collective effort. ECOPULSE integrates environmental responsibility directly into sport activities and events, turning participation into meaningful climate action.
How the Project Works
ECOPULSE is built on two complementary pillars:
1. Climate-compatible sport standards
Development and promotion of:
- practical roadmaps for greener sport events
- monitoring and reporting mechanisms
- carbon-neutral commitments
- alignment with the Paris Agreement and the European Green Deal
2. Sport as a tool for awareness and engagement
Using sport as a universal and inclusive platform to:
- educate citizens about climate change
- encourage environmentally responsible behavior
- mobilize communities through shared experiences
Project Objectives
Awareness raising
Engaging athletes, volunteers, and sport organizations to inform the public about climate change and carbon emissions through visible, relatable sport activities.
Prevention & mitigation
Organizing activities that actively reduce carbon footprints — both in sport events and everyday life.
Compensation & wellbeing
Supporting sport organizations in adopting climate-friendly practices while promoting healthier lifestyles and community wellbeing.
Promotion & sustainability
Encouraging environmentally responsible event design and long-term sustainability in the sport sector.
Activities Across Europe
ECOPULSE brings together citizens of all ages and abilities through inclusive environmental sport events:
- Plogging walks – brisk walking combined with litter collection (youth focused)
- Plogging hikes – family-oriented environmental activities
- Green Camping Movement – inclusive camping and clean-up activities, including families with children with disabilities
- Deep Clean-Up – diving and underwater cleaning for youth and women
- Green Wheelers – cycling and environmental clean-up events open to everyone
- Orienteering & Planting – navigation activities combined with mapping and tree-planting actions
Each activity transforms participation into direct environmental contribution.
Expected Impact
Through cooperation with municipalities and civil society organizations, ECOPULSE will design and implement climate-friendly sport events across Europe.
The project aims to:
- reach at least 80% of planned participation targets
- increase climate awareness among citizens
- encourage sustainable behavioral change
- embed long-term sustainability practices within the European sport sector
ECOPULSE demonstrates that sport is more than competition — it is a powerful driver of environmental responsibility and collective climate action.
