- Context/background
A circular economy is an economy which focuses on reparing, reusing and refurbishing materials during production, distribution and consumption – an economy in which the value of products, materials and resources are maintained as long as possible, therefore minimizing waste generation. While recent reports, such as the European Commission’s March 2019 report on the Circular Economy Action Plan, show a continuous growth in the contribution of recycled materials in the overall EU material demand – there is still a potential for significant improvement, which necessitates supplemental efforts and actions be taken in this field.
IDEA will integrate Circular Economy specifications into a comprehensive Non-Formal Education programme providing specific competencies, through the production of educational materials and the creation of a Practitioners Network online platform. The project will aim to provide adult educators with innovative methodologies and educational resources to engage at-risk groups with 21st century topics, such as circular economies, sustainability and plastic waste reduction.
- Objectives
The IDEA partnership will aim to promote the concepts and ideas of a circular economy (CE) and sustainability among unemployed adults, by fostering a greater interaction between the European Green Deal and the EU Gender Equality Strategy 2020-2025. Circular economies foster not only employability, but also social inclusion by promoting a greater sense of social equity within the greater framework of sustainable development.
In order to achieve this, IDEA will provide adult educators and trainers with skills, competences and tools to create upskilling pathways for adults and increase the educational opportunities for adults in the field of circular economy and sustainability.
- Activities and results
The project will produce three results:
– IDEA Guide: a practical resource for adult educators and adult education institutions regarding tools and methodologies for fostering circular economy and sustainability within their organisations, as well as a Training Format – a resource for direct application of said methods in trainings.
– IDEA Interactive Toolkit: a set of guidelines, workshops and video tutorials on tinkering and non-formal education activities fostering circular economies.
– IDEA Practitioners Network: a web-platform and comprehensive tool for fostering plastic circular economies through recycled art/craftwork – comprising a resources and a forum section.
- Impact
Through the production of the results and the implementation of the activities of this project, the consortium strives to provide meaningful insights and concrete pathways to stakeholders and policy-makers for improvement of policies and offers in the field of adult education and social inclusion, while also promoting greater participation in education and social life for adults at risk of exclusion.
